The question I get asked all the time is, what rug size should I buy? Let’s explore that room by room.

Living Room Rug Sizes

The rule of thumb in the living room is that all of the front two legs of the furniture should be on the rug in small to medium size living rooms like in this room below.

In larger living rooms that can hold an oversized rug without overwhelming the space, all the furniture can sit on the rug. The exception is you can always have a couple of side chairs with just the front two legs on the rug. See below.

So choose the largest rug the room will allow for. the bigger the better.

Dining Room Rug Sizes

The most important thing when buying a rug for your dining area is that when someone pulls a chair back to enter or exit the table, the chairs are still on the rug, not half on, half off. That means your rug should be about 4’ wider and longer than your table.

Bedroom Rug Sizes

The rug size depends on the bed size. With each bed size the way I style a bedroom rug is to place it horizontally under the bed and bring it up about two thirds of the way stopping just short of the nightstands. This maximizes the amount of rug space and allows for a cozy first step out of bed.

King Size Bed

The ideal size for a king size bed is a 9’ x 12’ rug. This gives you a nice cozy surround. However, if that size feels overwhelming to the size of your room, you could get by with an 8’ x 10’.

Queen Size Bed

For a queen size bed an 8’x10’ rug is ideal. However if room size or budget are an issue, you could get by with a 6’x9’ rug. You can use blue tape to tape out the different size rugs.

Twin Beds

If you have two twin beds side by side you have a few options. You can use a 3’x5’ rug between the two beds or depending on the room size use an 8’x10’ or 9’x12’ under the beds and nightstands.

Runner Rug Sizes

Most runners are about 2’ – 3’ wide. Measure the width and length of the space where you are putting your runner. Select a runner that is at least 4” from the side walls of your space and at least 12” shorter than the length of the space on each end.
